How Does the MESTEK EMF02R Electromagnetic Radiation Tester Work? Malaysia
How Does the MESTEK EMF02R Electromagnetic Radiation Tester Work?
Introduction
Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are produced wherever electricity flows. From power distribution systems and electrical appliances to wireless communication devices, EMF is part of our daily environment. While these fields are usually invisible, they can be measured using a dedicated EMF meter.
The MESTEK EMF02R Electromagnetic Radiation Tester is designed to detect and display both electric field (EF) and magnetic field (MF) values in real time. Understanding how the EMF02R works helps users obtain more accurate readings and use the instrument effectively during inspections in homes, offices, factories, laboratories, and commercial buildings across Malaysia.
Understanding Electromagnetic Fields
Before learning how the EMF02R works, it is important to understand the two types of electromagnetic fields it measures.
Electric Field (EF)
An electric field is created whenever voltage is present, even if no current is flowing. Common sources include:
Wall sockets
Electrical wiring
Distribution boards
Power adapters
Household appliances
Electric fields are generally measured in volts per meter (V/m).
Magnetic Field (MF)
A magnetic field is produced when electric current flows through a conductor. Typical sources include:
Electric motors
Transformers
High-current cables
Industrial machinery
Air conditioners
Elevators
Magnetic fields are commonly displayed in microtesla (T).
How the MESTEK EMF02R Detects EMF
The EMF02R contains built-in sensors that continuously detect surrounding electromagnetic fields.
During operation, the meter:
Detects nearby electric fields.
Detects nearby magnetic fields.
Converts the detected signals into digital values.
Displays both readings simultaneously on the LCD screen.
Activates an audible alarm if the measured value exceeds the preset warning level.
This allows users to identify areas with stronger electromagnetic radiation quickly and efficiently.
Simultaneous Dual Measurement
One of the advantages of the MESTEK EMF02R is its ability to measure electric field and magnetic field at the same time.
Instead of switching between different measurement modes, users can monitor both values simultaneously, making inspections faster and more convenient.
This feature is especially useful when inspecting:
Electrical control panels
Office workstations
Server rooms
Industrial equipment
Residential electrical systems
Real-Time Monitoring
The EMF02R continuously updates the measured values as you move around an area.
For example, when walking towards a transformer or electrical panel, you may notice:
Magnetic field readings increase.
Electric field values change depending on the distance from energized equipment.
This real-time response allows users to locate the source of higher EMF levels more efficiently.
Audible Alarm Function
The EMF02R includes an alarm function that warns users when the detected EMF exceeds the preset threshold.
This feature is useful because it:
Alerts users immediately.
Reduces the need to constantly watch the display.
Helps identify high-radiation areas quickly during inspections.
It is particularly beneficial when checking large facilities or complex electrical installations.
Data Hold and Maximum Value
During inspections, users often need to record measurements.
The EMF02R provides useful functions such as:
Data Hold Freezes the current reading for easier recording.
Maximum Value Display Stores the highest measured value during the inspection.
These features help improve reporting accuracy and simplify documentation.
Typical Measurement Procedure
Using the EMF02R is straightforward:
Turn on the instrument.
Allow the reading to stabilize.
Hold the meter at the desired measurement location.
Slowly move around the equipment or area.
Observe the electric and magnetic field readings.
Record the highest values if required.
Compare readings from different locations to identify stronger EMF sources.
Best Practices for Accurate Measurements
To achieve reliable results:
Keep your hand behind the instrument during measurement.
Measure at a consistent distance from the equipment.
Avoid touching energized electrical components.
Move the meter slowly around the area.
Take multiple readings from different positions.
Compare measurements over time if monitoring changes.
Following these practices improves consistency and accuracy.
