When maintenance teams suspect corrosion inside a steel pipe, one of the most important questions is:

Where Should You Measure a Pipe?


Taking one random reading is rarely the best inspection strategy.

Known corrosion locations


Several measurements around an area can provide more useful information than one isolated reading.

Suppose a maintenance technician checks four points around a pipe:


12 o'clock: 6.82 mm

3 o'clock: 6.79 mm

6 o'clock: 5.91 mm

9 o'clock: 6.80 mm


The lower reading at the 6 o'clock position may justify repeat measurements and closer investigation.


This demonstrates why ultrasonic thickness testing can be more useful when performed systematically.


Build Thickness Monitoring Locations


For recurring inspections, create documented Thickness Monitoring Locations (TMLs).


For example:

Location: Elbow 03

TML: P101-E03-01

Previous Reading: 6.35 mm

Current Reading: 6.08 mm


During the next inspection, measure the same location again.


Over time, the company can build a thickness history rather than collecting unrelated readings.


Can WT-100A Actually See Corrosion Inside the Pipe?


No.


This distinction is important.


The WT-100A is a thickness gauge, not an imaging device.


It measures the remaining thickness at the measurement location. A reduced thickness reading may indicate material loss, but the instrument does not provide an internal image of the corrosion.


For complex or safety-critical inspection requirements, other NDT methods and qualified inspection personnel may be necessary.


What About Painted Pipes?


Paint and coatings can influence conventional ultrasonic thickness measurements.


If the objective is to determine the remaining metal wall thickness, users should understand whether the coating affects the measurement and whether surface preparation is required.


Do not automatically assume that every ultrasonic thickness gauge removes coating thickness from its reading.


What About Heavily Rusted Pipes?


Heavy rust, scale and pitting can make ultrasonic measurements more difficult.


Before measuring:


Inspect the surface.


Remove loose contamination where appropriate.


Apply suitable couplant.


Ensure good probe contact.


Take several readings.


Confirm that the results are repeatable.


A single unstable reading should not be treated as a reliable final measurement.


Why Historical Data Is More Valuable Than One Reading


Imagine a pipe is measured today at:


5.80 mm


Is that good or bad?


Without additional information, the number alone may not tell you enough.


Now consider:


2024: 6.60 mm

2025: 6.20 mm

2026: 5.80 mm


The maintenance team can now see that the measured thickness at this location has been decreasing.


That is much more useful for condition monitoring.
