Linshang LS252D Hardness Conversion Guide – HL, HRC, HB and HV Explained Malaysia   When using a portable hardness tester, one question often causes confusion:   Why can one instrument display HL, HRC, HB and HV when these are different hardness testing methods?   The Linshang LS252D Leeb Hardness Tester fundamentally uses the Leeb rebound hardness testing principle.   The correct scale depends on the application.   HL   Useful when working directly with Leeb hardness measurements.   HRC   Commonly used for hardened steels and heat-treated components.   HB   Frequently encountered for various engineering metals and components.   HV   Common in engineering, laboratory and material testing applications.   The required drawing, specification or QA/QC procedure should guide the selection.   Should I Record HL or Converted Values?   For internal QA/QC, it can be useful to understand and record the actual testing method used.   For example, instead of documenting only:   Hardness: 45 HRC   a quality procedure may need to distinguish that the value came from a portable Leeb measurement and conversion.   The appropriate reporting format should follow the company's quality system, customer requirements and applicable standards.   Example: Heat-Treated Shaft   A manufacturer needs to check a large heat-treated shaft.   The engineering drawing uses HRC.   Because the shaft is too large to conveniently place on a bench tester, the QA/QC engineer performs suitable Leeb measurements using the LS252D.   The instrument provides converted HRC values for comparison with the expected hardness range.   This can be useful for process checking.   However, if final customer acceptance specifically requires a direct Rockwell C test, the appropriate direct test may still be necessary.   Example: Large Casting   Another manufacturer needs to compare hardness across several areas of a large casting.   The company normally works with HB values.   Portable Leeb testing allows multiple suitable locations to be measured, with applicable converted HB values used for practical comparison.   The key is to understand that the measurement method remains Leeb.   Surface Condition Affects Conversion Too   A conversion cannot repair a poor original measurement.   If the Leeb reading is affected by:   Rust   Scale   Roughness   Workpiece movement   Insufficient thickness   Poor positioning   then the converted HRC, HB or HV value will also be affected.   Therefore:   Good conversion starts with a good Leeb measurement.   Five Rules for Using Hardness Conversion   Rule 1: Know Your Material   Do not guess the material setting.   Rule 2: Ensure the Workpiece Is Suitable   Check size, thickness, weight and rigidity.   Rule 3: Prepare the Surface   Avoid unsuitable rust, scale, paint and contamination.   Rule 4: Take Multiple Measurements   Do not depend on one isolated reading.   Rule 5: Know the Required Test Method   If the specification requires direct Rockwell, Brinell or Vickers testing, conversion may not satisfy the requirement.   Can LS252D Replace Three Different Bench Testers?
