Does this mean the EDM is damaged? Not necessarily. A total station that cannot measure distance can be caused by the prism, target mode, prism alignment, atmospheric conditions, dirty optics, settings, battery condition or EDM system itself. Before sending the instrument for repair, work through the problem systematically. How Does a Total Station Measure Distance? A total station uses an Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) system. Reflectorless Measurement Has Limitations Reflectorless measurement is extremely useful, but it does not mean the total station can measure every visible surface.
