Qiwei PH-220W for Food and Beverage pH Testing Malaysia

pH measurement is commonly used in food and beverage processing to monitor water quality, product consistency, cleaning processes and changes between production batches.

The Qiwei PH-220W External Electrode Portable pH Meter provides a convenient method for routine pH and temperature checks of suitable liquid samples, process water and cleaning water.

Its external wired electrode can be placed inside the sample container while the main display remains in the operator’s hand.

The Qiwei PH-220W is available from stock at MTM Precision Malaysia.

Why Is pH Important in Food and Beverage Processing?

pH can affect:

Product taste

Colour and appearance

Fermentation

Ingredient performance

Product consistency

Cleaning effectiveness

Microbial control

Storage stability

Quality-control decisions

A change in pH may indicate incorrect ingredients, process variation, contamination or inconsistent water quality.

The acceptable pH range depends on the product and production process. Operators should follow their approved product specification and quality-control procedure.

Where Can the Qiwei PH-220W Be Used?

The Qiwei PH-220W may be used for routine checking of suitable liquid samples such as:

Process water

Ingredient water

Rinse water

Cleaning water

Beverage samples

Juice samples

Liquid food ingredients

Fermentation samples

Sauce or liquid seasoning samples

Water-treatment samples

The electrode must be compatible with the sample. Thick, oily, high-protein or strongly contaminated samples may require a specialised food pH electrode and a different cleaning procedure.

Why Is the External Electrode Useful?

A conventional pH pen requires the complete sensor end of the instrument to be placed into the sample.

The Qiwei PH-220W uses an external wired electrode, allowing the operator to insert only the probe into the sample container.

This can be more convenient when:

The sample is inside a bottle or beaker

Multiple samples must be compared

The display must remain easy to read

The instrument body should be kept away from splashes

The sample container is narrow

The electrode needs to be cleaned separately

The main instrument should remain dry and should not be immersed in the sample.

How to Measure a Liquid Food or Beverage Sample

Prepare a clean sample container.

Confirm that the sample is suitable for the electrode.

Check that the temperature is within the meter’s specified range.

Calibrate the meter using fresh pH buffer solutions.

Rinse the electrode with clean or distilled water.

Place the electrode into the sample.

Ensure that the sensing area is sufficiently immersed.

Move the electrode gently to remove trapped air bubbles.

Wait for the reading to stabilise.

Record the pH value, temperature, product and batch information.

Clean the electrode using the appropriate procedure.

Do not return a tested sample to the production batch.

Why Should Sample Temperature Be Recorded?

The pH value and electrode response can be affected by temperature.

When comparing different production batches, quality-control staff should try to measure samples under consistent conditions.

Recording the sample temperature helps determine whether a reading difference is caused by the product or by different measuring conditions.

Can the PH-220W Test Thick or Solid Food?

The PH-220W is primarily suitable for water and compatible liquid samples.

Thick, semi-solid or solid foods may require a specialised electrode designed for direct penetration or difficult samples.

Examples include:

Meat

Cheese

Dough

Thick sauce

Jam

Yoghurt

Semi-solid food

High-protein products

Customers should confirm the sample type before selecting a pH meter or electrode.

Why Is the pH Reading Slow or Unstable?

Possible causes include:

Product residue on the electrode

Oil or fat coating the sensor

Protein contamination

Dry electrode

Old calibration solution

Incorrect calibration

Sample temperature changes

Insufficient stabilisation time

Damaged or ageing electrode

Food and beverage samples may leave deposits that cannot be removed by rinsing with water alone.

Cleaning the Electrode After Food Testing

Correct cleaning depends on the type of sample.

After measurement:

Rinse the electrode immediately

Remove visible residue carefully

Use a suitable electrode-cleaning solution

Avoid aggressive wiping of the glass sensor

Do not use an incompatible solvent

Recondition the electrode if the response becomes slow

Store it in the correct pH-electrode storage solution

Recalibrate before important measurements

Separate cleaning procedures may be required for oil, fat, protein, sugar and mineral deposits.

How Often Should the PH-220W Be Calibrated?

Calibration frequency depends on:

Frequency of use

Required measurement accuracy

Type of sample

Condition of the electrode

Internal quality-control requirements

Difference between expected sample values

For routine production checks, many users calibrate before a testing session or according to their approved quality-control procedure.

Fresh buffer solutions should be used. Do not pour used buffer back into its original container.

Can It Be Used for Cleaning-Water Checks?

The Qiwei PH-220W can be used for routine checking of compatible cleaning-water and rinse-water samples.

A pH result may help operators identify whether:

Cleaning chemicals remain in the rinse water

Neutralisation is incomplete

The final rinse differs from the incoming water

The cleaning process requires further investigation

However, pH alone does not confirm that a surface or production line is hygienically clean.

Can PH-220W Results Be Used for Official Quality Documentation?

The PH-220W is suitable for routine operational checks and preliminary quality-control measurements.

Formal laboratory or regulatory work may require:

Approved test methods

Traceable calibration

Documented buffer verification

Temperature control

Suitable food-grade electrodes

Defined sample-preparation procedures

Laboratory-quality instruments

Users should follow their internal quality system and applicable Malaysian requirements.

Who Should Use the Qiwei PH-220W?

The Qiwei PH-220W is suitable for:

Beverage manufacturers

Food-processing factories

Commercial kitchens

Water bottling operations

Ingredient suppliers

Quality-control departments

Production supervisors

Water-treatment contractors

Training and educational laboratories
