How to Measure Car Paint Thickness with UNI-T UT343A Malaysia

Content

When inspecting a used vehicle, the paint may look uniform to the eye even when certain panels have been repainted.

A paint thickness gauge provides another useful data point by measuring the coating thickness over metal body panels.

The UNI-T UT343A Coating Thickness Gauge supports both Fe and NFe metal substrates and offers a measuring range of 0–1750 μm, making it suitable for automotive paint inspection and general coating measurement in Malaysia.

What Does a Paint Thickness Gauge Tell You?

A paint thickness gauge measures the distance between the probe and the underlying metal substrate.

On a vehicle, this normally represents the combined thickness of surface coating layers above the metal.

The objective is not simply to find the highest number.

What matters is the pattern of readings across different locations.

For example:

Bonnet: 118 μm

Front door: 121 μm

Rear door: 119 μm

Rear quarter panel: 205 μm

The higher reading on one panel does not automatically prove accident damage, but it provides a reason to inspect that area more carefully.

Step 1: Check the Surface

Before measurement, make sure the measurement point is:

Clean

Dry

Free from dirt

Free from excessive dust

Suitable for probe contact

Contamination between the probe and surface can affect the reading.

Step 2: Take a Reference Reading

Instead of deciding that a particular number is automatically "normal", first take readings from several comparable panels.

For example, measure:

Bonnet

Roof

Front doors

Rear doors

Front fenders

Rear quarter panels

Boot lid

This creates a useful reference pattern for that particular vehicle.

Step 3: Take Multiple Measurements

Do not measure only once in the centre of each panel.

Take readings at several points.

For example, on a door:

Upper section: 115 μm

Centre: 118 μm

Lower section: 117 μm

Consistent readings provide a different inspection picture from:

Upper section: 116 μm

Centre: 245 μm

Lower section: 310 μm

Large differences should lead to further inspection rather than an immediate conclusion.

Step 4: Compare Left and Right Sides

Comparing similar areas can be useful.

For example:

Left front door: 110–125 μm

Right front door: 108–122 μm

The results are relatively similar.

If another panel repeatedly measures significantly higher or lower, investigate why.

Possible reasons can include:

Repainting

Additional coating layers

Previous body repair

Different panel material

Panel replacement

Different original coating process

Why Fe and NFe Detection Matters

Vehicle construction can involve different metals.

Fe generally refers to ferrous substrates such as steel.

NFe refers to non-ferrous substrates such as aluminium.

Because the UNI-T UT343A supports Fe and NFe measurement, it offers greater flexibility when checking vehicles containing different metallic body components.

However, coating thickness gauges designed for metal substrates generally cannot provide meaningful conventional Fe/NFe coating readings on plastic body parts.

Don't Judge a Car from One Reading

This is one of the most important points when using a paint thickness meter.

A reading of 200 μm does not automatically mean:

"Accident car."

Likewise, a reading of 100 μm does not guarantee that a vehicle has never been repaired.

Paint systems, manufacturers, models, panel materials and previous work can all affect the results.

The correct approach is:

Measure → Compare → Identify unusual patterns → Inspect further

Paint thickness measurement should be combined with visual inspection and other vehicle-condition checks.

Why UNI-T UT343A Is Useful for Automotive Inspection

The UT343A offers several practical functions for this application:

0–1750 μm measurement range

Fe/NFe substrate detection

Single measurement mode

Continuous measurement mode

MAX/MIN/AVG functions

199 data storage

μm/mil unit selection

Upper and lower limit settings

It can be used by:

Used-car dealers | Workshops | Vehicle inspectors | Body & paint shops | Car buyers | Automotive service businesses

Paint Thickness Gauge Malaysia

A coating thickness gauge is a useful inspection tool when you need objective measurement data instead of relying only on visual appearance.

The UNI-T UT343A can also be used beyond automotive applications, including:

Metal fabrication

Powder coating

Painted steel inspection

Aluminium coating inspection

Manufacturing QA/QC

Industrial maintenance
