Complete Auto Level Setup for Foundation and Floor Level Checking Malaysia

A **Topcon AT-B4A, stable tripod and 5m levelling staff** can be used to check foundation elevations, concrete platforms and floor levels during building and industrial construction.

The system compares elevations at selected points using a horizontal line of sight.

It does not automatically determine the structural tolerance or replace an approved survey-control procedure. The required level and acceptance criteria must come from the project drawing, specification or responsible engineer.

## Common Building Applications

The complete setup may be used for:

- Foundation-level checking
- Footing excavation depth
- Column-base elevations
- Concrete platform levels
- Finished-floor checks
- Machine foundations
- External aprons
- Warehouse floors
- Factory extensions
- Drainage around buildings
- Transferring elevations between work areas

The number and spacing of measurement points should suit the project requirements.

## Confirm the Reference Level

Before beginning, identify:

- Approved benchmark
- Benchmark elevation
- Temporary benchmark, if used
- Required finished level
- Drawing revision
- Unit of measurement
- Grid or point numbering
- Project tolerance
- Areas requiring independent verification

Do not begin from an assumed floor or wall mark unless it has been confirmed.

An incorrect benchmark affects every calculated elevation.

## Select the Tripod Position

Choose a position where the AT-B4A can observe the benchmark and as many measurement points as possible.

Avoid setting the tripod:

- On loose construction material
- Near an unsupported edge
- On wet or flexible flooring
- In a vehicle route
- Where concrete work may disturb it
- Near vibrating machinery
- Where workers may strike the legs
- Directly on an unverified platform

The tripod should remain undisturbed throughout the observation sequence.

## Set Up the Tripod

Before mounting the AT-B4A:

1. Spread the legs to form a stable base.
2. Position the head at a practical working height.
3. Press or place the feet securely on the surface.
4. Lock every leg clamp.
5. Check the tripod head for movement.
6. Confirm that no leg is sliding.

On smooth floors, ensure the tripod feet cannot move.

Do not place loose boards, stones or debris below the feet.

## Mount and Prepare the AT-B4A

After securing the instrument:

1. Centre the circular bubble.
2. Focus the eyepiece until the crosshairs are clear.
3. Focus on the 5m staff.
4. Remove parallax.
5. Allow the compensator to settle.
6. Recheck the bubble.
7. Confirm that the instrument remains stable when focused or rotated.

If the bubble moves, inspect the tripod before taking readings.

## Establish the Height of Instrument

Place the levelling staff vertically on the approved benchmark.

Take a backsight reading and calculate:

**Height of Instrument = Benchmark Elevation + Backsight Reading**

Example:

- Benchmark elevation: 20.000m
- Backsight reading: 1.350m
- Height of instrument: 21.350m

Record the benchmark, backsight and setup number clearly.

## Calculate Each Floor or Foundation Elevation

Move the staff to the required measurement point.

Calculate:

**Point Elevation = Height of Instrument − Staff Reading**

Example:

- Height of instrument: 21.350m
- Staff reading: 1.420m
- Point elevation: 19.930m

Compare the calculated elevation with the required design level.

Do not compare the raw staff reading directly with the drawing elevation.

## Use Clearly Marked Grid Points

For larger floors or platforms, use a consistent grid or approved point layout.

Each point should have:

- Unique identification
- Clear physical location
- Recorded staff reading
- Calculated elevation
- Difference from design level
- Date and time
- Operator or team reference

A systematic grid makes it easier to identify high and low areas.

Avoid taking random readings without point identification.

## Floor Level vs Floor Flatness

An auto level can compare elevations at selected points.

However, a floor-level survey is not automatically the same as a specialised floor-flatness assessment.

The appropriate method depends on:

- Project specification
- Point spacing
- Floor purpose
- Required tolerance
- Applicable inspection procedure
- Responsible consultant’s requirements

Do not claim that a limited number of auto-level readings represents the complete condition of the floor.

## Keep the Staff Vertical

A leaning staff normally gives a reading that is too large.

Use a staff bubble where practical and check that:

- All sections are locked
- The staff is straight
- The base is undamaged
- The staff rests on the exact point
- The operator does not change position
- The staff does not slide
- Wind or nearby work does not move it

Repeat any reading that appears unusual.

## Check the Staff Base on Concrete

Concrete buildup, dirt or a damaged staff base may affect the reference height.

Before placing the staff:

- Clean the base
- Confirm full contact
- Avoid loose material
- Use the marked point
- Do not place it on an uneven object
- Check whether wet concrete is deforming

The base should remain stable during the complete observation.

## Foundation Excavation Checks

When checking excavation depth, confirm:

- The benchmark remains outside the disturbed area
- The tripod is away from the excavation edge
- The staff point is clearly defined
- Loose soil is removed from the measurement point
- Machinery has stopped during observation
- The operator can work safely

The auto level should not be positioned where the excavation may collapse or equipment may strike it.

## Checking Concrete Platforms

For a concrete platform, measure:

- Corners
- Centre points
- Equipment-mounting positions
- Drainage edges
- Connection points
- Additional locations required by the project

One reading cannot confirm the level of an entire platform.

Use enough points to represent the required area.

## Machine Foundation Checks

For machine foundations, elevation is only one part of installation control.

Additional work may involve:

- Alignment
- Position
- Anchor bolts
- Grout thickness
- Surface condition
- Manufacturer installation requirements

The AT-B4A and staff can support elevation checking but may not replace specialised alignment equipment.

## Moving the Instrument

If all points cannot be observed from one setup:

1. Select a stable turning point.
2. Take and record the foresight.
3. Move the tripod and AT-B4A.
4. Set up and level the instrument again.
5. Take a backsight on the same turning point.
6. Calculate the new height of instrument.
7. Continue the measurements.

Do not reuse the previous height of instrument.

## Common Foundation and Floor Measurement Errors

Possible causes of incorrect results include:

- Wrong benchmark
- Outdated drawing
- Tripod movement
- Staff leaning
- Staff base on debris
- Parallax
- Incorrect backsight
- Calculation mistake
- Wrong point identification
- Instrument moved without a turning point
- AT-B4A line-of-sight error

Review both the field setup and calculation when a result appears unreasonable.

## Perform Independent Checks

For important work:

- Repeat unusual points
- Check a known reference point
- Reobserve selected grid points
- Perform a closing check
- Compare with another approved method where required
- Review calculations before issuing results

Do not wait until concrete placement or equipment installation is completed to investigate an unexplained difference.

## Field Error or AT-B4A Calibration Problem?

**A field error is more likely when:**

- The tripod moved
- The staff was leaning
- The benchmark was incorrect
- Point identification changed
- A calculation mistake is found
- Results improve after correcting the setup

**AT-B4A checking may be required when:**

- The error remains with a verified tripod and staff
- A two-peg test indicates excessive error
- The compensator does not settle
- Closing checks continue to fail
- The instrument was dropped
- Different operators obtain the same controlled error

Calibration cannot correct an incorrect benchmark or field-book entry.
