UNI-T UT372D RPM Reading Unstable or Incorrect Troubleshooting Malaysia

An unstable or obviously incorrect RPM reading does not always mean that the **UNI-T UT372D Tachometer** is faulty.

The problem may be caused by reflective tape, target position, surrounding light, incorrect measurement mode or an actual change in machine speed. Checking the measurement setup systematically can help separate an instrument issue from a machinery problem.

## Common RPM Reading Problems

Users may experience:

- RPM reading continuously jumping

- Reading much higher than expected

- Reading lower than expected

- No reading displayed

- Reading appears only occasionally

- Contact RPM changes with hand pressure

- Optical measurement works on one machine but not another

- Reading becomes unstable at a longer distance

- Motor speed appears different from the controller setting

Start by confirming whether the problem occurs in non-contact mode, contact mode or both.

## Problem 1: More Than One Reflective Mark

A non-contact tachometer calculates speed by detecting reflected pulses.

If the rotating component has two reflective marks, the instrument may detect two pulses during each revolution. The displayed RPM may therefore be approximately double the actual speed.

Other reflective objects can create a similar problem:

- Polished shaft sections

- Reflective bolts

- Shiny coupling surfaces

- Bright labels

- Damaged reflective tape

- Nearby moving components

Use **one clear reflective target** for each revolution. Cover or avoid other shiny areas where practical.

## Problem 2: Reflective Tape Is Too Small or Dirty

The UT372D must detect a clear difference between the reflective target and the surrounding surface.

A weak signal may be caused by:

- Tape that is too small

- Dirty or oily tape

- Damaged reflective material

- Dust on the rotating component

- Poor contrast between the tape and background

- Tape moving or lifting from the surface

Stop and isolate the machine before replacing the tape.

Clean the target area and apply a fresh reflective strip securely. Never attempt to adjust the tape while the component is rotating.

## Problem 3: Incorrect Measuring Distance

The UT372D non-contact target distance is approximately **50 to 500 mm** under suitable conditions.

The usable distance can change depending on:

- Reflective-target size

- Target angle

- Ambient lighting

- Surface condition

- Rotational speed

- Hand stability

If no reading appears, move within the recommended distance and aim directly at the reflective mark.

Do not move closer if doing so places the operator inside an unsafe area.

## Problem 4: Poor Measuring Angle

The optical sensor must receive a clear reflection from the target.

If the instrument is held at an excessive angle, the reflected signal may not return reliably to the sensor. This can result in intermittent or unstable readings.

Adjust the position slightly while maintaining a safe distance. Hold the UT372D steady and allow enough time for the reading to stabilise.

## Problem 5: Strong Surrounding Light

Direct sunlight, flashing lights or highly reflective machinery may interfere with optical measurement.

Try to:

- Shade the target area without obstructing moving components

- Change the measuring angle

- Reduce unwanted reflections

- Use a cleaner and more distinct target

- Move to a more stable measuring location

Never place a hand or loose object near a rotating component merely to block light.

## Problem 6: The Wrong Measurement Mode Is Selected

The UT372D supports several measurement modes, including:

- Non-contact RPM

- Contact RPM

- Frequency

- Revolution counting

- Surface velocity

- Length

A reading may appear incorrect if the instrument is set to the wrong mode or unit.

Before measuring, confirm:

- Contact or non-contact operation

- RPM, frequency, speed or length mode

- Correct contact wheel selection

- Required metric or imperial unit

For conveyor measurement, do not confuse roller RPM with belt surface speed.

## Problem 7: Contact Wheel Is Slipping

During contact measurement, the wheel or attachment must maintain stable contact with the moving surface.

A low or fluctuating reading may occur when:

- Insufficient pressure is applied

- Excessive pressure slows the wheel

- The instrument is held at an angle

- The contact wheel is dirty

- The belt or roller surface is slippery

- The wheel bounces because of vibration

- The wrong attachment or setting is used

Keep the contact wheel aligned with the direction of movement and apply only enough pressure to maintain consistent contact.

Stop the measurement if the instrument becomes difficult to control.

## Problem 8: Machine Speed Is Actually Changing

If the setup is correct, the changing reading may reflect a real machinery condition.

Possible causes include:

- Variable load

- Variable-frequency drive adjustment

- Belt slipping

- Loose coupling

- Unstable power supply

- Speed-controller fault

- Mechanical resistance

- Production process changes

Use the UT372D maximum, minimum and average functions to observe the variation.

Repeat the measurement under a defined condition, such as:

- Machine running without load

- Machine running at normal load

- Fixed controller setting

- Same measurement point

- Same operating temperature

Recording the test condition makes the result more useful for maintenance analysis.

## Problem 9: Measured RPM Does Not Match the Motor Nameplate

A motor may not operate at exactly the speed printed on the nameplate under every condition.

Consider:

- The motor’s rated frequency

- Actual drive frequency

- Motor load

- Induction-motor slip

- Pulley ratio

- Gearbox ratio

- Which shaft is being measured

For belt-driven equipment, motor-shaft RPM and driven-shaft RPM can be different.

For geared equipment, the output speed may be much lower than the motor speed. Confirm the correct measuring point before deciding that the result is wrong.

## Problem 10: Low Battery or Instrument Condition

If readings are weak, intermittent or the display behaves abnormally, inspect the instrument condition.

Check for:

- Low-battery indication

- Damaged optical window

- Dirt on the sensor area

- Loose contact accessory

- Physical damage after a drop

- Moisture exposure

- Display or button problems

Replace the batteries when required and clean the instrument according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

Do not use aggressive solvents on the sensor or housing.

## Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

Before concluding that the tachometer is faulty:

1. Confirm the correct mode and unit.

2. Use only one reflective mark.

3. Clean or replace the reflective tape.

4. Check the measuring distance.

5. Improve the measuring angle.

6. Reduce unwanted reflections.

7. Hold the instrument steadily.

8. Repeat the measurement several times.

9. Compare contact and non-contact results where safely possible.

10. Test the instrument on another known rotating source.

If the same abnormal result appears repeatedly on different equipment, the tachometer may require further checking.

## Checking, Calibration and Repair Are Different

A functional check compares the instrument against a known or reference rotational speed to determine whether the reading appears reasonable.

Calibration compares the tachometer with a traceable reference and records the measurement results and uncertainty according to the calibration provider’s procedure.

Repair is required when the instrument has a confirmed hardware, sensor, display, button or electronic fault.

Calibration does not automatically repair a damaged instrument. The tachometer should be inspected first if it has been dropped, exposed to moisture or is unable to produce a stable reading.
