UNI-T UT377C Pinless Moisture Meter Frequently Asked Questions Malaysia
The UNI-T UT377C is a pinless moisture meter for non-destructive checks on wood, drywall and masonry.
The following answers cover common questions from building inspectors, renovation contractors, woodworking businesses and property owners in Malaysia.
Does the UT377C Need Pins?
No. The UT377C uses a pinless induction sensor.
Place the rear sensor flat against the material to take a reading. It does not require metal probes to be inserted into the surface.
This helps prevent pinholes in painted walls, finished furniture and wooden flooring.
What Materials Can the UT377C Measure?
The meter provides four modes:
Softwood
Hardwood
Drywall
Masonry
It is suitable for screening wooden products and comparing moisture conditions across common building materials.
What Is the Wood Measurement Range?
In Softwood and Hardwood modes, the measurement range is:
4%–32%
0.1% resolution
Specified value error: ±4%
The result may be affected by wood species, density, thickness and surface coatings.
Take several measurements before evaluating a complete batch of timber.
Does a Masonry Reading of 60 Mean 60% Moisture?
No.
Drywall and Masonry modes display a relative value from 0 to 99.9. The number is intended for comparison and is not an absolute moisture-content percentage.
A reading of 60 should be compared with a reference reading taken from a similar area believed to be dry.
How Deep Can the UT377C Measure?
The UT377C has a sensing depth of up to approximately 30mm.
The effective response depends on the material, thickness, density and objects behind the surface.
It may not detect moisture located deep inside a thick wall or floor.
Can the UT377C Detect a Leaking Pipe?
The meter cannot directly locate a pipe or prove that a pipe is leaking.
It can help identify an area showing higher moisture readings. Further inspection is needed to determine whether the cause is:
A leaking pipe
Failed waterproofing
Roof leakage
Rain penetration
Condensation
Trapped moisture from an older leak
Can It Be Used on Painted Walls?
Yes, it can be used for non-destructive comparison on suitable painted surfaces.
However, readings may be affected by:
Paint thickness
Wall material
Metal behind the surface
Different plaster layers
Uneven sensor contact
Compare several points made from the same construction material.
Can the UT377C Measure Through Tiles?
It may respond to moisture-related conditions behind certain tiled surfaces, but the reading can be influenced by the tile, adhesive, waterproofing layer and wall structure.
Use the result for relative comparison only.
A tiled-area reading should not be treated as an exact moisture-content value.
Can It Check Concrete Floors?
Masonry mode can be used to compare relative readings across certain concrete surfaces.
However, it does not replace a project-specified concrete moisture test or laboratory method.
If a flooring manufacturer requires a particular slab-testing procedure, follow that requirement.
Can It Check Wooden Flooring?
Yes. The Softwood or Hardwood mode can be used on suitable wooden flooring.
The pinless sensor helps prevent visible holes in finished boards.
For engineered flooring, adhesive and core layers may influence the reading.
What Material Thickness Is Recommended?
The specified target-thickness range is approximately 6mm–30mm.
If the material is too thin, the surface behind it may affect the result.
Avoid testing thin boards while they are placed directly on metal, damp concrete or wet materials.
Why Does the Reading Increase Near a Pipe or Screw?
Metal can influence the response of a pinless moisture meter.
Possible causes include:
Water pipes
Electrical wiring
Screws and nails
Metal wall studs
Reinforcement bars
Foil-backed insulation
Scan around the location. A narrow, isolated pattern may be caused by hidden metal rather than widespread moisture.
Why Is the Reading Unstable?
Possible causes include:
Incorrect measurement mode
Uneven sensor contact
Rough or curved surfaces
Low battery
Hand positioned near the sensor
Mixed construction materials
Movement during measurement
Metal behind the surface
Place the meter flat against a suitable test area and repeat the measurement.
What Does the Colour Bar Show?
The colour simulation bar provides a quick indication of changing readings:
Green: Lower reading
Yellow: Intermediate reading
Red: Higher reading
The colours are screening indicators. The user should still check the numerical value and compare it with a reference area.
When Does the Audible Alarm Activate?
The alarm activates at approximately:
Above 24% in wood mode
Above 60 relative value in building-material mode
An alarm indicates a high reading based on the programmed threshold. It does not automatically confirm an active water leak.
Can It Confirm That a Wall Is Ready for Painting?
The UT377C can help compare the repaired area with a dry reference section and monitor whether readings are decreasing.
However, there is no single universal UT377C value for every wall and paint system.
Follow the paint manufacturer’s requirements and project specifications.
Can It Be Used After Flooding?
Yes. The UT377C can support preliminary checking and drying-progress monitoring after water intrusion.
Use it only after the area is safe to enter and electrical hazards have been addressed.
Severely damaged or contaminated materials may still require removal and professional assessment.
Is Calibration Required?
Users should follow their internal quality procedures and customer requirements.
Before important inspections, check the meter on a stable reference material and confirm that it produces repeatable readings.
If readings appear abnormal or inconsistent across known materials, arrange for the instrument to be inspected.
Who Is the UT377C Suitable For?
The UNI-T UT377C Pinless Moisture Meter is suitable for:
Property inspectors
Renovation contractors
Waterproofing contractors
Building-maintenance teams
Furniture manufacturers
Timber suppliers
Flooring contractors
Facility-management departments
Homeowners performing preliminary checks
