PM2.5 or CO2 Monitor for an Air-Conditioned Office – Which Should You Choose Malaysia

PM2.5 or CO2 Monitor for an Air-Conditioned Office – Which Should You Choose Malaysia

Should you buy a PM2.5 monitor or a CO2 monitor for your air-conditioned office?

The answer depends on what you want to investigate.

PM2.5 monitoring focuses on fine airborne particles. CO2 monitoring helps you observe how occupancy and ventilation affect indoor carbon dioxide levels.

For offices in Malaysia, these measurements answer different questions.

1. Choose PM2.5 Monitoring for Particle Concerns

A PM2.5 monitor is useful when you want to observe changes in fine-particle levels.

Possible applications include:

Comparing indoor and outdoor conditions

Monitoring particle changes during haze

Observing changes when doors or windows open

Comparing readings before and during air-purifier operation

However, PM2.5 readings do not identify the chemical composition or exact source of the particles.

A low PM2.5 reading does not confirm that every aspect of indoor air quality is satisfactory.

2. Choose CO2 Monitoring for Occupied-Room Trends

A CO2 monitor can help you observe what happens as people occupy a room.

Useful locations include:

Meeting rooms

Training rooms

Shared offices

Classrooms

Enclosed discussion areas

Record readings alongside the number of occupants and ventilation conditions.

CO2 readings require context. They do not measure particles or every indoor pollutant.

A reading alone also does not establish the cause of discomfort or replace a ventilation assessment.

3. Air Conditioning and Ventilation Are Different Functions

A room can feel cool without receiving sufficient outdoor air for its occupancy.

The amount of outdoor air depends on the building's ventilation arrangement, rather than simply whether the air conditioner is running.

Temperature alone cannot tell you how well an occupied room is ventilated.

Similarly, a comfortable temperature does not indicate the PM2.5 level.

Choose the measurement that matches the question you need to answer.

4. When Is a Combined Monitor More Useful?

Consider a monitor with both PM2.5 and CO2 when your office has particle concerns and occupied-room ventilation questions.

Check the exact model's sensor list before purchasing.

Do not assume that every air-quality monitor measures CO2, PM2.5, TVOC and formaldehyde.

5. Confirm How CO2 Is Measured

If CO2 is your main requirement, ask whether the instrument measures it using a dedicated CO2 sensor.

Some products display an estimated value labelled eCO2.

Estimated CO2 and directly measured CO2 should not be treated as equivalent.

Confirm the measurement method, range and accuracy specifications before comparing models.

6. Compare Trends Under Similar Conditions

For useful comparisons, record:

Room and measurement location

Time

Number of occupants

Door and window conditions

Ventilation operating status

Air-purifier operation, where relevant

Follow the manufacturer's placement instructions. Avoid breathing directly onto a CO2 sensor or placing a monitor where one local source dominates the reading.

Repeated observations under documented conditions are more useful than an isolated number.
