How to Compare Air Quality Before and After a Meeting Malaysia
How to Compare Air Quality Before and After a Meeting Malaysia
Does your meeting room feel different after several people have occupied it for an hour?
An air-quality monitor can help you record how selected measurements change during the meeting.
For offices in Malaysia, a useful comparison includes before, during and after occupancy, together with notes about ventilation and room use.
1. Choose the Measurements That Match Your Question
Start with what you want to investigate.
QuestionMeasurement to considerHow does CO2 change as people occupy the room?CO2Do fine-particle levels change?PM2.5Does the room become warmer?TemperatureDoes relative humidity change?Relative humidity
These measurements provide different information.
A low PM2.5 reading does not explain the CO2 level, and a comfortable temperature does not confirm suitable ventilation.
Check that the monitor measures the parameters you need.
2. Keep the Monitor in One Position
Use a location suitable for the instrument and the comparison.
Follow the manufacturer's placement instructions and avoid locations where readings may be dominated by:
Someone breathing directly onto the sensor
An air-conditioning outlet
An open doorway
A nearby local particle source
Keep the monitor in the same position throughout the comparison.
Moving it between observations introduces another variable.
3. Record Conditions Before the Meeting
Allow the monitor to stabilise according to its instructions.
Record:
Time
Number of people already present
Selected readings
Door and window conditions
Ventilation operating status
Describe the room's actual condition.
An empty-room reading is a starting observation, not a certificate of satisfactory air quality.
4. Observe Changes During Occupancy
Record readings at consistent intervals or use a suitable data-logging function.
Alongside each observation, note:
Number of occupants
Meeting duration
Door openings
Changes to ventilation
Any other relevant activity
This helps distinguish a gradual trend from an isolated reading.
Do not diagnose the cause of discomfort from one measurement alone.
5. Continue Recording After the Meeting
After people leave, continue observing under documented conditions.
Note whether:
The door remains open or closed
Ventilation continues operating
People remain in the room
Another meeting begins
This helps you understand how readings change after occupancy ends.
Avoid changing several conditions at once if your objective is to compare one specific operational change.
6. Use a Simple Observation Table
StageInformation to recordBefore the meetingTime, occupancy, readings and ventilation conditionsDuring the meetingReadings at recorded times, occupancy and any changesEnd of the meetingReadings and remaining occupantsAfter the meetingFollow-up readings and operating conditions
For comparisons across several meetings, use similar measurement positions and record differences in occupancy, duration and ventilation.
A larger meeting and a shorter meeting are not directly equivalent tests.
7. When Should You Investigate Further?
If repeated observations show a recurring concern, share the records with the person responsible for building ventilation or indoor environmental conditions.
Useful information includes:
Monitor model and measurement method
Timestamped readings
Room location
Occupancy records
Ventilation arrangements
Description of the recurring concern
A portable monitor supports observation. A fuller assessment may require additional measurements and technical investigation.
