DITRON 614 vs 616 Digital Groove Calipers | Round Measuring Points Malaysia

Choosing a Digital Groove Caliper for Curved Recessed Features

The DITRON 614 and 616 Digital Groove Calipers use round measuring points for accessing suitable arc-shaped grooves.

The 614 Series is designed for outside groove measurements. The 616 Series is designed for inside groove measurements. Both offer zero-setting at any position and millimetre/inch conversion.

For machining workshops and inspection teams in Malaysia, the correct choice depends on groove location, measuring span, contact geometry and drawing tolerance.

614 SERIES: OUTSIDE GROOVE DIGITAL CALIPER

The DITRON 614 Series has inward-facing round contacts for measuring suitable external grooves.

The catalogue identifies arc-shaped outside groove measurement as its intended application. The contacts must reach the required groove surfaces without interference from shoulders or adjacent features.

614 VS 616: THE MAIN DIFFERENCES

Groove Location

Choose the 614 Series for suitable external grooves. Choose the 616 Series for suitable internal grooves.

Contact Direction

The 614 contacts face inward around an external feature. The 616 contacts face outward towards an internal feature.

Measuring Range

The 614 models have listed ranges starting at zero. The 616 models start at 24mm, 25mm or 30mm.

Accuracy

The 614 models are listed at ±0.04mm or ±0.05mm. The 616 models are listed at ±0.05mm or ±0.07mm.

Jaw Access

The jaw dimensions differ between the two series. A measuring range that covers the required dimension does not guarantee that the contacts can reach it.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Digital Display

The numerical display provides a direct reading without requiring interpretation of a mechanical vernier scale.

Zero-Setting at Any Position

The zero function supports measurements from a selected reference and comparative checks against a known dimension.

Zero-setting changes the displayed reference. It does not remove the physical measuring limits of the jaws.

Millimetre/Inch Conversion

Unit conversion supports drawings and inspection records using metric or imperial dimensions.

The catalogue’s reference to relative and absolute measurement conversion does not establish that these models use an absolute position encoder.

ROUND CONTACTS OR FLAT CONTACTS?

Round contacts and flat contacts seat differently against groove surfaces.

For an arc-shaped groove, the round contact must reach the surface that defines the required dimension. Contact on a groove flank, edge radius or chamfer can produce a different result from contact at the intended groove bottom.

Choose the contact geometry from the component drawing and inspection method. Do not assume that round-point and flat-point groove calipers are interchangeable.

HOW TO CHECK COMPATIBILITY

Identify the Required Dimension

Confirm whether the drawing specifies groove diameter, groove width or another feature. These are different measurements.

Check the Contact Diameter

The 150mm and 200mm models have a listed contact diameter of 2mm. The 300mm models have a listed contact diameter of 3mm.

Contact diameter alone does not establish the minimum usable groove width. Insertion clearance, groove profile and the complete jaw geometry also matter.

Check Reach and Entrance Clearance

Provide the groove depth, distance from the entrance, surrounding shoulders and available opening.

For internal grooves, confirm that the jaws can enter the bore and expand into the intended measuring position.

Check Measurement Performance

Compare the listed accuracy with the drawing tolerance. Confirm display resolution separately if it is important to the inspection requirement.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

External Groove Inspection

The 614 Series can be considered for accessible arc-shaped grooves on shafts and similar machined components.

Internal Groove Inspection

The 616 Series can be considered for suitable recessed grooves in sleeves, bores and housings.

Machining Setup Checks

Specialised contacts can help inspect recessed features where conventional caliper jaws cannot seat correctly.

Maintenance and Replacement Parts

Groove dimensions can support comparison of worn components with drawings or replacement parts.

These applications are relevant to engineering teams in Selangor, Penang, Johor and other industrial areas in Malaysia.

BASIC MEASUREMENT WORKFLOW

1. Clean the groove and contacts.

Remove chips, residue and loose contamination. Check for burrs or damaged contact surfaces.

2. Inspect the caliper.

Check the measuring points, sliding movement and display operation.

3. Verify the reference.

Follow the manufacturer’s procedure and use a suitable known reference, particularly for the internal measuring arrangement.

4. Position both contacts.

Ensure that the contacts reach the intended surfaces and remain clear of adjacent edges.

5. Align and apply gentle contact.

Avoid forcing the points into the groove or applying excessive pressure.

6. Repeat the check.

Remove and reposition the caliper to assess consistency before recording the result.

CARE AND ROUTINE CHECKING

Protect the projecting contacts from impact and bending. Keep the beam and sliding surfaces clean.

If readings vary, check contact seating, alignment, contamination and reference setting first. Persistent disagreement with a suitable reference warrants further inspection or calibration.

The supplied page does not specify battery type, an IP rating, data output or package contents. Confirm these details where required.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Which series measures outside grooves?

The DITRON 614 Series is designed for arc-shaped outside groove measurements.

Which series measures inside grooves?

The DITRON 616 Series is designed for arc-shaped inside groove measurements.

What is the display resolution?

The supplied catalogue page does not state resolution. Confirm it before ordering.

Do these calipers support inches?

Yes. Millimetre/inch conversion is listed.

Can the 616-24-150 measure from zero?

Its listed range is 24-150mm. Zero-setting does not change the physical measuring capacity.

Does contact diameter define the minimum groove width?

No. Groove profile, clearance and the full contact arrangement must also be checked.

What information helps with selection?

Provide a component drawing showing groove location, diameter, width, depth, entrance clearance and required tolerance.
