What Does %LEL Mean?

A reading displayed as %LEL indicates how much of that lower explosive limit has been reached.

For example, a %LEL reading is not the same as a direct gas percentage by volume. Users must understand the instrument display and the gas used for sensor calibration or configuration.

  9. Check the surrounding atmosphere with a suitable %LEL monitor.

  10. Follow the factory emergency procedure if an unsafe condition is detected.

Do not create a flame or spark to test whether gas is present.

Why Moving the Detector Slowly Matters

A gas sensor needs time to respond. Moving the detector too quickly around pipe connections may cause a small leak to be missed.

For a more effective inspection:

  • Move systematically along the pipeline

  • Pause at each connection

  • Check all sides of a valve

  • Inspect flexible hoses carefully

  • Repeat the test after equipment conditions change

  • Consider ventilation direction
