The UNI-T UT343E Coating Thickness Gauge can measure suitable non-conductive coatings over aluminium and other compatible non-ferrous metal substrates.

It is useful for aluminium-profile manufacturers, powder-coating factories, window and door fabricators, façade contractors and incoming quality-control teams in Malaysia.

Why Check Aluminium Coating Thickness?

Aluminium profiles may be coated to improve appearance, surface durability and environmental protection.

If the coating is inconsistent, users may experience:

  • Visible colour differences
  • Thin coverage at edges
  • Uneven surface protection
  • Premature coating failure
  • Excessive powder consumption
  • Assembly or fitting problems
  • Customer rejection
  • Rework and project delays

A coating thickness gauge provides numerical data that can support production and incoming inspection.

Use NFE Mode for Aluminium

Aluminium is a non-ferrous and non-magnetic metal, so the UT343E uses its NFE measurement method.

The instrument can identify the substrate automatically or allow the operator to select the mode manually.

For repeated inspection of known aluminium profiles, manual NFE selection can help maintain a consistent workflow.

Always confirm that the coating-and-substrate combination is suitable for the instrument.

Common Aluminium Applications

The UT343E may be used for suitable coatings on:

  • Aluminium window frames
  • Aluminium door frames
  • Curtain-wall profiles
  • Louvres
  • Façade components
  • Aluminium railings
  • Architectural trims
  • Electrical housings
  • Machine enclosures
  • Powder-coated aluminium panels
  • Furniture components
  • Extruded aluminium profiles

The probe requires enough surface area to make stable contact.

Confirm the Coating Specification

There is no single acceptable coating thickness for every aluminium product.

The required range should come from:

  • Customer specifications
  • Project documents
  • Engineering drawings
  • Coating manufacturer recommendations
  • Internal quality procedures
  • Approved reference samples
  • Applicable product standards

Confirm whether the requirement applies to the complete coating system or a specific layer.

Check the UT343E Before Inspection

Before measuring aluminium products:

  1. Clean the probe.
  2. Select the non-ferrous reference plate.
  3. Check the uncoated plate.
  4. Place a standard coating film on the plate.
  5. Take several readings.
  6. Confirm that the values are stable.
  7. Clean and dry the aluminium surface.
  8. Select automatic or NFE mode.

A reference check is not the same as a traceable calibration certificate.

Measure Different Areas of the Profile

Do not measure only the widest and easiest surface.

Check areas such as:

  • Main visible face
  • Side walls
  • Flat centre sections
  • Corners
  • Edges
  • Recessed channels
  • Areas near holes
  • Cut ends when relevant
  • Sections facing away from the spray gun
  • Touch-up areas

Powder distribution can vary across complex aluminium extrusions.

Curved and Narrow Sections

Some aluminium profiles have narrow, curved or decorative surfaces.

These shapes may affect probe contact and measurement repeatability.

When measuring a difficult profile:

  • Use the flattest available area
  • Hold the probe perpendicular
  • Avoid rocking the probe
  • Take several readings
  • Compare equivalent positions
  • Record the exact measurement location

If the surface is too narrow for proper contact, the result may not be reliable.

Inspection Before Fabrication

Checking aluminium profiles before cutting and assembly can help identify coating problems earlier.

Incoming inspection can verify:

  • Supplier batch consistency
  • Differences between profile lengths
  • Coating variation between colours
  • Out-of-range samples
  • Damage or touch-up areas
  • Changes between repeated deliveries

Finding a problem before fabrication may reduce rework on completed windows, doors or façade panels.

Inspection After Fabrication

Coating condition may also be checked after cutting, machining or assembly.

Inspect areas that may have been affected by:

  • Handling
  • Cutting
  • Drilling
  • Fastening
  • Installation
  • Touch-up work
  • Transportation
  • Contact with tools or fixtures

The gauge measures thickness where the coating remains intact. It does not determine adhesion or hidden substrate damage.

Use Upper and Lower Limits

The UT343E allows the user to set upper and lower coating limits.

The LED and audio alarm can help operators identify readings outside the approved range during repetitive inspections.

The actual value and measurement location should still be recorded.

A pass-or-fail alarm does not replace the company’s sampling plan or acceptance procedure.

Bluetooth Records for Supplier Quality

The UT343E stores up to 3300 readings and supports Bluetooth App and PC data analysis.

This helps quality-control teams:

  • Organise readings by supplier
  • Record profile or project numbers
  • Compare incoming batches
  • Review minimum, maximum and average values
  • Identify recurring coating variation
  • Maintain evidence for supplier discussions
  • Reduce handwritten recording

Consistent naming of products, batches and measurement locations makes the stored data more useful.

Coating Thickness Is Not the Same as Anodising Inspection

Confirm whether the aluminium surface is:

  • Powder coated
  • Painted
  • Anodised
  • Plated
  • Covered with another finish

Different surface treatments may require different measurement methods, standards or instruments.

Do not assume that a gauge suitable for powder coating is automatically appropriate for every anodised or specialised aluminium finish.

Provide the exact surface treatment when requesting instrument advice.

Other Aluminium Quality Checks

Coating thickness is only one part of product inspection.

Depending on the specification, additional checks may be needed for:

  • Colour
  • Gloss
  • Adhesion
  • Curing
  • Hardness
  • Surface appearance
  • Impact resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Dimensional accuracy
  • Scratches or handling damage

The UT343E does not replace these other checks.

Who Should Use the UT343E?

The UNI-T UT343E is suitable for:

  • Aluminium extrusion companies
  • Powder-coating factories
  • Window and door fabricators
  • Façade contractors
  • Architectural metal suppliers
  • Incoming quality-control teams
  • Supplier quality engineers
  • Aluminium product manufacturers

Companies in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang can use it for compatible aluminium coating inspection and digital measurement records.
