When Do You Need a 2000μm Coating Thickness Gauge like UNI-T UT343E Malaysia

A coating thickness gauge with a 2000μm measuring range is useful when the expected coating may exceed the range of a basic automotive or general-purpose gauge.
The UNI-T UT343E measures from 0–2000μm on suitable ferrous and non-ferrous metal substrates. However, range alone should not determine the purchase. The user must also consider accuracy, substrate, surface shape, data storage and reporting requirements.
What Does 2000μm Mean?
A micrometre is written as μm.
- 1000μm equals 1mm
- 2000μm equals 2mm
The UT343E therefore measures compatible coatings up to approximately 2mm.
This does not mean that it measures the complete thickness of a 2mm steel plate. It measures the suitable coating layer over the metal substrate.
Applications That May Need a Wider Range
A 2000μm range may be useful for:
- Heavy protective coatings
- Multi-layer paint systems
- Thick powder coatings
- Repainted automotive panels
- Coatings over body filler in suitable areas
- Industrial machinery coatings
- Marine or corrosive-environment protection
- Coated steel structures
- Specialised production finishes
- Applications where the thickness is initially unknown
The actual coating-and-substrate combination must remain compatible with the instrument.
When a Lower Range May Be Enough
Not every customer needs a 2000μm gauge.
A lower-range instrument may be sufficient for:
- Routine car-paint comparison
- Standard powder-coating checks
- Occasional workshop inspection
- Basic incoming inspection
- Products with a controlled, relatively thin coating
- Users who do not need Bluetooth or extensive memory
If the approved coating specification is far below the instrument’s maximum range, consider accuracy, resolution and data functions rather than choosing only by the highest number.
Range Is Not the Same as Accuracy
A wider measuring range does not automatically mean that every reading is more accurate.
The UT343E has a stated accuracy of ±(2%H + 2μm), where H refers to the measured thickness.
The expected measurement error therefore changes with the thickness being measured.
Before purchasing, compare:
- Expected coating thickness
- Instrument accuracy
- Required acceptance tolerance
- Resolution
- Calibration requirement
- Measurement environment
An instrument range may cover the application while its accuracy is still unsuitable for a very tight production tolerance.
Check the Required Resolution
The UT343E provides:
- 0.1μm resolution from 0–99.9μm
- 1μm resolution from 100–2000μm
Resolution is the smallest displayed increment. It is not the same as measurement accuracy.
A display showing 0.1μm does not mean that every reading is accurate to 0.1μm.
Confirm the Base Material
The UT343E supports compatible coatings over:
- FE substrates: Steel, iron and other magnetic metals
- NFE substrates: Aluminium and other compatible non-magnetic metals
It is not intended for ordinary coating measurement on:
- Plastic
- Wood
- Glass
- Rubber
- Concrete
- Fibreglass
- Composite material without a compatible metal base
A wide range does not overcome an incompatible substrate.
2000μm for Automotive Inspection
For automotive paint checking, the wider range can be useful when a repaired panel contains multiple layers of paint, primer or filler.
However, the inspector should not assume:
- Every high reading means major accident damage
- Every original panel has the same thickness
- Steel and aluminium panels are directly comparable
- Plastic bumpers can be measured normally
- One reading represents the complete vehicle
The correct method is to compare several points across equivalent metal panels.
2000μm for Protective Coatings
Industrial protective systems may include:
- Primer
- Intermediate coat
- Topcoat
- Local touch-up layers
- Additional protection at critical areas
The total coating thickness may be higher than a simple decorative finish.
A wider range provides additional capacity, but the inspector must confirm whether the specification refers to individual layers or the complete coating system.
2000μm for Powder Coating
Most powder-coating inspections may not use the full 2000μm range, but a wider range can provide flexibility when checking:
- Heavy coating build-up
- Multiple coats
- Reworked components
- Special protective finishes
- Unknown incoming products
- Unusually thick areas at corners
The required thickness must come from the approved production specification.
Surface Shape Still Matters
Even when the thickness falls within the measuring range, reliable contact may be difficult on:
- Sharp edges
- Small fasteners
- Narrow profiles
- Deep recesses
- Strongly curved components
- Rough surfaces
- Areas near holes
- Irregular welds
Confirm that the probe can sit flat and perpendicular to the surface.
For very small or complex components, a different probe or measurement method may be required.
Why Data Functions May Matter More Than Range
The UT343E offers:
- Storage for 3300 readings
- Bluetooth mobile application
- USB communication
- PC data analysis
- Maximum, minimum and average values
- Upper and lower limit alarms
- Automatic or manual substrate identification
For factories and professional inspectors, these functions may provide more practical value than the extra measurement range alone.
Questions to Ask Before Buying
Before selecting the UT343E, confirm:
- What is the coating material?
- What is the base metal?
- What thickness is expected?
- What are the acceptance limits?
- Is the surface flat enough for the probe?
- How many readings must be stored?
- Is Bluetooth or PC reporting required?
- Is calibration documentation required?
- Will the gauge be used occasionally or every day?
- Is the application automotive, industrial or production-based?
These answers help determine whether the UT343E is appropriate or unnecessarily advanced.
Who Should Choose the UT343E?
Choose the UNI-T UT343E when you need:
- A coating range up to 2000μm
- Ferrous and non-ferrous measurement
- Bluetooth App connectivity
- PC data analysis
- Storage for 3300 readings
- Upper and lower limit alarms
- Frequent multi-point inspection
- More organised measurement records
