DITRON 115 vs 117 Groove Vernier Calipers | Cylindrical Point Measurement Malaysia

Choosing a Cylindrical Point Caliper for Outside and Inside Grooves

The DITRON 115 and 117 Series Groove Vernier Calipers use cylindrical pointed contacts to reach recessed measuring surfaces.

The 115 Series is designed for arc-shaped outside groove measurements. The 117 Series is designed for inside groove measurements.

For machining workshops and inspection teams in Malaysia, the choice depends on groove location, contact access, measuring range and required accuracy. The contact points must reach the intended surface without interference from shoulders, chamfers or groove edges.

115 SERIES: OUTSIDE GROOVE MEASUREMENT

The DITRON 115 Series has inward-facing contacts for measuring suitable external grooves.

The cylindrical pointed contact arrangement provides access to arc-shaped outside grooves where conventional flat caliper jaws may not seat correctly.

Three models are listed, covering 0–150mm, 0–200mm and 0–300mm.

117 SERIES: INSIDE GROOVE MEASUREMENT

The DITRON 117 Series has outward-facing contacts for accessing suitable internal grooves.

The listed ranges begin at 24mm, 25mm or 30mm, depending on the model. These lower limits must be considered alongside the physical clearance needed to insert and position the jaws.

The measuring range alone does not establish whether the instrument can enter a particular bore.

115 VS 117: WHICH SERIES DO YOU NEED?

Choose by Groove Location

Select the 115 Series for suitable external grooves. Select the 117 Series for suitable internal grooves.

Choose by Measuring Span

The 115 models have listed ranges starting at zero. The 117 models have minimum readings above zero because of their internal measuring configuration.

Choose by Contact Geometry

Compare the complete jaw and contact dimensions with the component drawing. The Φ dimension is 2mm on the 150mm and 200mm models, and 3mm on the 300mm models.

These dimensions do not, by themselves, establish the minimum usable groove width. Point shape, insertion path and clearance also matter.

Choose by Accuracy

The outside groove models are listed at ±0.04mm or ±0.05mm. The inside groove models are listed at ±0.05mm or ±0.07mm.

Assess the stated accuracy together with the inspection method and component tolerance.

CYLINDRICAL POINTS OR FLAT MEASURING POINTS?

Cylindrical pointed contacts provide a different contact geometry from flat measuring points.

For an arc-shaped or recessed groove, the contact must reach the surface that defines the required dimension. A point that seats on a radius, chamfer or groove flank may produce a different result from contact at the intended groove bottom.

Select the contact shape from the workpiece geometry and drawing requirement. Do not assume that different groove caliper designs are interchangeable.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Grooved Shaft Inspection

The 115 Series can be considered for accessible external groove dimensions on shafts and similar machined parts.

Internal Groove Checks

The 117 Series can be considered for suitable grooves within bores, sleeves and housings.

Machining Setup and In-Process Inspection

Specialised contacts can help inspect recessed features during machining where standard jaws cannot reach the required surface.

Maintenance and Replacement Part Checks

Groove dimensions can support comparison of worn components with drawings or replacement parts.

These applications are relevant to engineering workshops in Selangor, Penang, Johor and other industrial areas in Malaysia.

MEASUREMENT WORKFLOW

1. Identify the required dimension.

Confirm whether the drawing specifies a groove diameter, width or another feature. Use a contact arrangement suitable for that exact dimension.

2. Clean the groove.

Remove chips and deposits. Check for burrs or damage that could prevent proper seating.

3. Verify the instrument.

Inspect the contacts and sliding movement. Check against a suitable reference using the manufacturer’s procedure.

4. Position both contacts.

Ensure the points reach the intended surfaces without touching adjacent shoulders or edges.

5. Align and apply gentle contact.

Keep the caliper aligned with the dimension. Avoid forcing the points into the groove.

6. Repeat the check.

Remove and reposition the caliper to assess consistency. Where relevant, check additional positions around the component.

CARE AND ROUTINE CHECKING

Protect the measuring points from impact and bending. Keep the scale and sliding surfaces clean.

If readings vary, check contact seating, alignment, contamination and workpiece support. Persistent disagreement with a suitable reference warrants further inspection or calibration.

Confirm any required calibration documentation and supplied accessories when requesting a quotation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
