Suspended Solids vs TDS

 

These measurements provide different information.

 

Suspended Solids

 

Insoluble particles carried within the water and normally reported in mg/L.

 

Total Dissolved Solids

 

Dissolved substances commonly estimated through conductivity.

 

Cooling-water TDS may rise because dissolved minerals become concentrated, while suspended solids may rise because of dust, corrosion or biological material.

 

A TDS meter cannot directly measure suspended particles.

 

Suspended Solids vs Turbidity

 

Turbidity indicates water cloudiness and is normally reported in NTU or FNU.

 

Suspended solids are reported in mg/L.

 

The relationship depends on particle size, colour, shape and density. There is no universal conversion between NTU and mg/L.

 

Using both measurements may provide a broader view of cooling-water condition.
