Smart Sensor ST8904 4-in-1 Gas Detector for Confined Space Safety Malaysia
Smart Sensor ST8904 4-in-1 Gas Detector for Confined Space Safety Malaysia
Entering a confined space without checking the atmosphere can expose workers to oxygen deficiency, toxic gases and combustible gas hazards. The Smart Sensor ST8904 is a portable four-in-one gas detector designed to monitor four important gases simultaneously:
Oxygen (Oâ‚‚)
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Hydrogen sulphide (Hâ‚‚S)
Combustible gas (LEL)
It is suitable for workplace safety inspections, confined-space entry preparation and continuous personal gas monitoring.
What Does the Smart Sensor ST8904 Detect?
The ST8904 combines four gas sensors in one portable instrument.
GasMeasuring rangeWhy it mattersOxygen (O₂)0–30% VOLIdentifies oxygen-deficient or oxygen-enriched conditionsCarbon monoxide (CO)0–999 ppmDetects a toxic gas commonly associated with combustionHydrogen sulphide (H₂S)0–500 ppmMonitors toxic gas risks in sewage, wastewater and enclosed areasCombustible gas0–100% LELWarns when flammable gas approaches an unsafe concentration
The four readings can be viewed on the display, allowing the operator to monitor several atmospheric risks without carrying separate instruments.
Where Can the ST8904 Be Used?
The Smart Sensor ST8904 is suitable for applications such as:
Confined-space entry
Manholes and underground chambers
Sewage and wastewater facilities
Storage tanks and vessels
Factories and maintenance areas
Utility tunnels
Construction sites
Boiler and mechanical rooms
Petrochemical-related workplaces
General occupational safety inspections
The correct gas detector should always be selected according to the gases expected at the actual worksite.
Multiple Alarm Functions
When a measured concentration reaches a configured alarm point, the ST8904 can provide audible, visual and vibration warnings.
It also supports several important gas-monitoring functions:
Low alarm
High alarm
STEL alarm
TWA alarm
Peak-value display
STEL indicates short-term exposure, while TWA relates to average exposure over a longer working period. These functions help safety personnel assess more than just the instantaneous gas reading.
Diffusion Detection and Optional Pump Sampling
The standard ST8904 operates as a diffusion-type gas detector. Surrounding air must reach the sensors naturally before it can be measured.
An optional external sampling pump may be used for certain applications, such as drawing a sample through a hose. However, the pump, hose and related accessories should be confirmed before ordering because they may not be included in the standard package.
For pre-entry testing of deep tanks, manholes or other locations that cannot be approached safely, ask MTM Precision to recommend a suitable pumped gas detector or sampling arrangement.
Important: A Gas Detector Is Not a Substitute for Safe Work Procedures
A reading on the display alone does not make a confined space safe. Users should follow their organisation’s confined-space procedures, including:
Inspecting the detector before use.
Confirming that the required sensors are installed.
Performing a bump test according to the safety programme.
Testing the atmosphere before entry.
Monitoring continuously while work is in progress.
Responding immediately when an alarm activates.
Sending the instrument for periodic calibration.
Never silence or ignore an alarm without identifying the cause.
Does the ST8904 Need a Bump Test?
Yes. A bump test exposes the sensors briefly to a known gas concentration to confirm that:
The sensors respond
The display registers the gas
The audible alarm works
The warning lights operate
The vibration alarm activates
A bump test checks basic response and alarm operation. It is not the same as full calibration.
When Is Calibration Required?
Calibration compares the detector’s readings with certified reference gas and adjusts the instrument when necessary.
Calibration should be considered when:
The detector fails a bump test
Readings appear unstable or abnormal
The instrument has experienced a strong impact
Sensors have been exposed to very high gas concentrations
The detector has not been used for an extended period
The company’s safety procedure requires scheduled calibration
The manufacturer’s recommended interval has been reached
Sensor condition, storage environment and frequency of use can all affect performance.
Who Is the Smart Sensor ST8904 Suitable For?
The ST8904 is a practical option for companies that need a straightforward four-gas detector for routine safety monitoring.
It may be suitable for:
Safety officers
Maintenance technicians
Wastewater operators
Contractors
Facility-management teams
Confined-space entry teams
Utility and construction personnel
For applications requiring five or six gases, COâ‚‚ detection, specialised toxic gases, internal pump sampling or documented industrial certifications, another model may be more appropriate.
MTM Precision can compare the ST8904 with other available models before quotation.
