How to Check Wooden Flooring Moisture Before Installation with UNI-T UT377C Malaysia
Wooden flooring can expand, contract, lift or develop gaps when its moisture condition is unsuitable for the installation environment.
The UNI-T UT377C Pinless Moisture Meter allows flooring contractors and renovation teams to check wooden boards without inserting metal pins or leaving visible holes. It can be used to compare flooring packs, individual boards and areas suspected of moisture exposure.
Why Check Flooring Before Installation?
Wood naturally responds to changes in moisture and humidity.
Installing flooring under unsuitable conditions may contribute to:
Boards expanding after installation
Gaps forming between boards
Cupping or crowning
Warped flooring
Raised edges
Loose joints
Surface cracks
Mould below the flooring
Customer complaints after handover
Moisture testing should form part of the material inspection and site-preparation process.
Non-Destructive Testing for Finished Boards
Pin-type meters require probes to enter the wood. Although the holes may be small, they can still affect the appearance of finished flooring.
The UT377C uses a pinless induction sensor, making it suitable for checking:
Engineered wooden flooring
Solid timber boards
Finished flooring panels
Decorative wood surfaces
Replacement boards
Flooring already installed
The approximately 50mm × 50mm sensor area should remain flat against the board during measurement.
Select the Correct Wood Mode
The UT377C provides:
Softwood mode
Hardwood mode
Select the mode based on the wood species or the flooring manufacturer’s material information.
The wood measurement range is:
4%–32%
0.1% resolution
Specified value error: ±4%
For engineered flooring containing several layers, the result may represent the combined response of the surface, core and adhesive layers.
Inspect the Delivery Before Opening Every Pack
When flooring arrives at the project site:
Check the packaging for water damage.
Inspect boards from several packs.
Select samples from different parts of the delivery.
Measure boards stored near the floor or wall.
Compare the readings.
Record any pack showing significantly different results.
Do not judge the entire delivery using only one board.
If a pack has been exposed to rain or wet storage conditions, isolate it for further assessment.
Check Flooring During Acclimatisation
Wooden flooring is often stored at the installation location before work begins so that it can adjust to the indoor environment.
During this period:
Measure selected boards each day
Use the same measurement mode
Check the same locations where practical
Record room temperature and conditions
Compare boards from different packs
Follow the flooring manufacturer’s requirements
The UT377C also displays ambient temperature, which can be included in the inspection record.
Compare the Flooring with the Installation Area
The condition of the subfloor is also important.
Before installation, inspect for:
Visible damp patches
Recent screeding or concrete work
Plumbing leakage
Moisture near bathrooms
Ground-floor water penetration
Condensation
Previous flooding
Inadequate drying time
The UT377C can screen wood and compare relative readings on certain building materials, but it does not replace a specified concrete-slab moisture test.
If the flooring manufacturer requires a particular test method, follow that requirement.
How to Measure Each Board
For consistent results:
Select Softwood or Hardwood mode.
Place the board on a dry, non-metallic surface.
Keep the sensor flat against the wood.
Avoid measuring over metal fittings.
Take readings at both ends and the centre.
Repeat the measurement on several boards.
Compare the readings within the same batch.
The UT377C is designed for target thicknesses of approximately 6mm–30mm.
Thin flooring placed directly on metal, concrete or another damp surface may produce readings affected by the material underneath.
Check Installed Flooring After a Water Leak
The UT377C can also help assess flooring affected by:
Burst or leaking pipes
Bathroom overflow
Roof leakage
Air-conditioning drainage problems
Flooding
Water entering through doors or windows
Begin with an unaffected section as the reference area. Then scan progressively toward the damaged location.
Mark sections with consistently higher readings and monitor them after drying or repair.
Possible Causes of Incorrect Readings
Readings may be affected by:
Metal nails or screws
Foil-backed underlay
Heating systems below the floor
Adhesive layers
Concrete below thin flooring
Wood density
Surface coatings
Gaps below the board
Mixed flooring construction
A single unusual reading should be checked again from nearby positions.
Do Not Use One Universal Moisture Limit
Acceptable moisture conditions vary according to:
Wood species
Flooring construction
Manufacturer requirements
Installation method
Indoor environment
Subfloor type
Project specification
The UT377C reading should be evaluated against the flooring supplier’s recommendations and the project’s required inspection method.
Who Should Use the UT377C for Flooring?
The UNI-T UT377C Pinless Moisture Meter is suitable for:
Wooden-flooring contractors
Renovation companies
Interior designers
Property inspectors
Building-maintenance teams
Flooring suppliers
Furniture and woodworking businesses
Homeowners performing preliminary checks
Its non-destructive design makes it useful for screening finished boards without leaving pinholes.
