How to Measure DC Current Without Disconnecting the Wire Malaysia


Measuring DC current with a conventional digital multimeter normally requires the circuit to be opened so that the meter can be connected in series. This process can be inconvenient and may interrupt the operation of the equipment.

Why Measure Current Without Disconnecting the Circuit?


Opening a circuit to measure current can create several practical problems:

Direct meter connections may expose the technician to greater risk

Use an AC/DC Clamp Meter


Not every clamp meter can measure DC current.


A basic clamp meter may support only AC current. For applications involving batteries, solar panels, DC motors or vehicle charging systems, the instrument must specifically state that it supports DC current measurement.

Step 1: Inspect the Meter and Test Area


Before taking a measurement, inspect:


The clamp jaw


The meter housing


The display


The function selector


The conductor insulation


The surrounding electrical equipment


Do not use an instrument that is damaged, wet or operating abnormally.


Confirm that the expected current and system voltage are within the meter’s specified measurement range and safety category.


Step 2: Select DC Current Mode


Switch the FUZRR FR205D to the DC current or DC ampere mode.


AC and DC current are not the same measurement mode. Selecting AC current while testing a DC circuit will not produce a correct result.


Check the display to confirm that the DC indicator is shown before proceeding.


Step 3: Perform Zero Adjustment


Before placing the clamp around the wire, close the jaw completely and perform the meter’s zero adjustment.


This is important because DC clamp meters may detect:


Residual magnetism in the clamp


Nearby magnetic fields


The Earth’s magnetic field


Small electronic offsets


For better results, hold the meter in the same position and orientation that will be used during the actual measurement.


If the meter’s orientation changes significantly, repeat the zero adjustment.


Step 4: Clamp Around One Conductor


Open the jaw and place it around one conductor only.


Do not clamp around both the positive and negative cables at the same time. The currents travel in opposite directions, causing their magnetic fields to cancel each other. The meter may then show a value close to zero even when substantial current is flowing.


For correct measurement:


Clamp either the positive or negative DC conductor


Keep other current-carrying wires away from the jaw


Position the conductor near the centre of the clamp


Make sure the jaw closes completely


If the positive and negative conductors are enclosed inside one cable, they must normally be separated before a clamp-current measurement can be performed.


Step 5: Read the DC Current


Allow the displayed value to stabilise before recording the result.


Depending on the direction of current flow and the orientation of the clamp, the reading may appear as a positive or negative value.


A negative reading does not necessarily indicate a fault. It may simply mean that:


The clamp is facing the opposite direction


Current is flowing in the opposite direction


A battery is discharging rather than charging


Reverse the clamp orientation if a positive reading is preferred.


Step 6: Compare the Result


A current reading becomes more useful when it is compared with:


The equipment manufacturer’s specification


The rated current shown on the nameplate


A previous maintenance record


A similar operating circuit


Measurements under different load conditions


Measurements from other battery or solar strings


An unusual reading may indicate an overload, weak connection, defective component, unbalanced load or equipment that is not operating correctly.


Example: Measuring Vehicle Charging Current


To check the charging current of a vehicle:


Inspect the battery terminals and cables.


Set the FUZRR FR205D to DC current.


Close the jaw and perform zero adjustment.


Clamp around one battery cable.


Start the engine.


Observe the current reading.


Switch on electrical loads such as headlights and air conditioning.


Observe how the current changes.


The reading may vary according to the battery condition, alternator output, electrical load and charging-control system.


A clamp meter provides the current value, but the result should be interpreted together with battery voltage and the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.


Example: Measuring Solar DC Current


To measure the DC current in a solar PV circuit:


Confirm that the system voltage does not exceed the meter’s rating.


Identify a single accessible DC conductor.


Select DC current mode.


Perform zero adjustment.


Clamp around the conductor.


Record the current under the existing sunlight and load conditions.


Compare it with other similar strings if applicable.


Solar current changes with sunlight intensity, panel orientation, shading, temperature and system load. A lower reading does not automatically mean the panel is defective.


Only trained personnel should test solar installations because DC circuits can remain energised whenever the panels receive light.

Selecting AC Current Mode


An AC current setting cannot correctly measure a steady DC current.


Measuring Beyond the Instrument Rating


Never use the meter on a current, voltage or installation category beyond its published specifications.


Working Near Strong Magnetic Fields


Transformers, motors and other high-current conductors may influence the measurement.


Assuming Every Small Reading Is Accurate
